Myers Park Lighting Upgrade
OVERVIEW
Myers Park, located in Auckland CBD, underwent a significant lighting upgrade aimed at addressing key issues with the existing system. The previous lighting installation caused substantial glare and light spill, disturbing nearby apartment residents and breaching local bylaws regarding maximum spill and intensity limits.
Additionally, the old system contributed to light pollution by allowing upward spill, conflicting with Auckland’s Dark Sky initiatives. Another critical concern was the inadequate illumination in some areas, leading to a sense of insecurity for park visitors.

THE OBJECTIVES
The primary goal of this project was to improve pedestrian safety by enhancing park illumination while minimizing spill and glare. The project aimed to comply with local bylaws, reduce upward waste light, and align with Dark Sky principles.
THE CHALLENGES
One of the main challenges was the proximity of some light poles to residential windows, with some being less than 1 meter away. The WE-EF ASP530, with its IP65 rating and backlight shields, was the only product capable of achieving compliance with local regulations while addressing these concerns.
PRODUCT SELECTION
The Dark Sky Approved WE-EF ASP530 was chosen for its exceptional optical control, which significantly reduces spill and glare, as well as its backlight shields that help mitigate light disturbance in adjacent residential areas. The product’s durability and prior successful use in similar projects also provided Auckland Council with confidence in selecting WE-EF.
OUTCOMES
The lighting upgrade successfully reduced light spill and glare, dramatically improving the park’s ambiance and safety. The project received positive feedback from both the end client and engineers, where one remarked: “The result looks amazing, look at the cut off!”. Myers Park was also awarded the prestigious 2024 IESANZ People’s Choice Award for its outstanding lighting design and execution.
