Microsoft House Plaza
OVERVIEW
For this unique project, we worked with architects Warren & Mahoney, landscape architects Landlab and lighting engineers Mesh Consultants to design and implement a lighting solution to revitalise the plaza outside Microsoft House in Auckland's Viaduct Harbour.
The plaza redesign accompanied the full redesign and fitout of the lobby and multiple floors within the Microsoft House. The goal was to extend the modern, creative but functional design applied on the inside to the plaza in front of the building.
The project team engaged MHL to provide conceptual input and detailed recommendations further down the track.

THE CHALLENGE
The main challenge for this project was to balance operationality with creativity. As a public space, it's important for the plaza lighting to be functional and illuminate the space well at night. At the same time, the project team aimed to develop a creative solution that would elevate the space and match the new interior design of the Microsoft building.
THE SOLUTION
The plaza could have been lit with conventional lights on poles. However, that solution would have only addressed the functional needs, not the creative ambitions of the project team.
Careful creative consideration from Landlab resulted in a more intentional design approach for lighting: a catenary lighting system from WE-EF.
This solution adds the desired uniqueness to the space without sacrificing functionality by utilising products with a proven track record for durability across New Zealand's harsh environments.
